Gifts from nature: Sustenance

Whether through hunting, fishing, gathering or growing crops, Mother Nature has provided ways to satisfy our hunger!

During this season of holiday giving, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service would like to take time and reflect on the gifts we receive throughout the year from Mother Nature. Gifts of Nature are treasures to behold and wonders to be thankful for. 

For many, hunting, fishing and farming are the primary techniques to get food on the table. In addition, they are opportunities to connect with nature in a way that teaches respect, appreciation and life lessons in sustainability.

The Service works to create healthy landscapes that support wildlife and people, and the agency's history illustrates its important role in conserving habitat for ducks, deer, fish and other wildlife that act as a lifeline for so many. 

Since the start of the 19th century, outdoorsmen and women have made countless contributions to conservation and natural resources, and today, many hunting and fishing organizations support a variety of conservation issues. 

Within the Service, national wildlife refuges are the land base that provide opportunities for hunters and anglers to connect with the natural world and honor their appreciation for these gifts of nature.
